Raymond S. Nelson Jr.

Ray is a Museum Specialist Emeritus, having worked in the Graphic Arts Collection, at the Museum of American History, the Smithsonian Institution, for 31 years.  All aspects of printing history are of interest to him, but he has made type founding a specialty.  Ray is one of a handful of active punch cutters, and has made many of his tools – especially hand molds for casting type.  He can be seen at work in a series of videos on YouTube (search OutofSortsFilm) and in the BBC program, hosted by the actor Stephen Fry, called The Machine that Made Us, also found on YouTube.

Ray has a presence on Instagram and his website is at atelierpressandtypefoundry.com.
